WASHINGTON — More than a thousand people in Silver Spring, Maryland were spending the night without power after the second outage in their high-rise complex since the weekend.
Officials say an electrical fire Tuesday afternoon caused the power to go out at University Towers. NBC Washington reports firefighters rescued people who were trapped in elevators by the outage.
The Red Cross opened a shelter at Blair High School to help people stay cool, if they were seeking a way to get out of the heat. Some residents were choosing to stay at the building, as Montgomery County Fire officials said there was no order to evacuate University Towers.
On Sunday, there was also a power outage at the same complex.
Right now, officials have not given a timetable for when the electricity will be restored.
