Child dies after car crash in St. Mary’s County

WASHINGTON — A 12-year-old girl in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, died from injuries she suffered in a car crash on May 1.

In a news release, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s office said they received word the girl died from her injuries on Friday, May 11.

Police responded to a single vehicle crash on Indian Bridge Road and Park Drive in Great Mills, Maryland a little before 7 a.m. on May 1.

Police said their initial investigation found that a 2009 Honda Accord was traveling southbound on Indian Bridge Road when for unknown reasons the car left the roadway, struck an embakement and a mailbox. The car continued to travel across Park Drive and hit several street signs before coming to a stop.

The driver was identified as 57-year-old Kelly Rapert of Lusby, Maryland. She had incapacitating injuries and was taken to a hospital. The 12-year-old girl was a passenger in the car and suffered severe incapacitating injuries when she was taken to the hospital.

Police said neither speed, nor drugs or alcohol appear to be factors in the crash. Police don’t know why the car left the roadway.
