WASHINGTON — Police say a man stabbed his roommate then barricaded himself inside the Leonardtown, Maryland, residence for more than five hours Sunday.

Maryland police said Gary Flint, 37, stabbed his 41-year-old female roommate following an argument in the 21700 block of Potomac View Drive before 10:20 p.m. Sunday.

She was taken to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment.

Flint has been charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder, as well as first- and second-degree assault.

Maryland police received a call about the assault from a witness who told police that the victim was being attacked by a man who lived at the residence.

Police found the injured victim on their way to the residence. She told police she got into an argument with Flint, during which he assaulted her and then stabbed her with a sharp object multiple times.

She was able to escape with another person who was in the home, but Flint stayed at the residence. Police went to the location, but Flint refused to exit for more than five hours.

At around 4:45 a.m., members of the Maryland State Police Tactical Assault Team Element entered the home and found Flint upstairs. He was arrested and taken to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital to treat a minor injury that occurred during his arrest.

Police were unable to say what caused the argument, but the investigation is ongoing.

“They were just roommates … He was clearly agitated about something,” Ron Snyder of the Maryland State Police Office of Media Communications said.
