OAKLAND, Md. (AP) — A former student at a western Maryland community college faces sentencing for stabbing another female student 13 times during a fight in the school cafeteria.
The sentencing Wednesday in Oakland comes three months after a jury convicted 20-year-old Shamaine Moore of second-degree assault in the January 2015 stabbing of 21-year-old Daniqua Harrington of Washington, D.C.
Both were students at Garrett College in McHenry.
Moore faces up to 10 years in prison.
Assistant Public Defender Michael Stankan says Moore acted in self-defense after Harrington punched her.
Garrett County State’s Attorney Lisa Thayer Welch acknowledges that Harrington hit Moore first but she says Moore overreacted.
Another student was cut in the hand trying to intervene.
