WASHINGTON — It was a busy weekend for the Humane Rescue Alliance in D.C., thanks in part to an offer from Nats’ pitcher Max Scherzer, and his wife Erica, to pay for all pet adoption fees for the weekend.
“We seriously moved a lot of animals into new homes, which was fantastic,” said Matt Williams with the Humane Rescue Alliance. “So kudos to them, thanks to them because it was an amazing weekend for us.”
Erica Scherzer is a board member at the Humane Rescue Alliance.
In all, 125 animals found new homes in the span of three days as part of an effort to clear the shelters at the Humane Rescue Alliance to make room for animals that were affected by Hurricane Harvey.
125 adoptions in 3 days! 13 cats & 14 dogs are still left. Can we clear the shelters completely for more #Harvey animals coming next week? https://t.co/iDRJuDKEBs

“We did receive a transport of animals from Louisiana and we expect another transport this week,” Williams said. “These guys need to chill out a little while here and relax a bit before we put them up for adoption, but certainly keep an eye on our website when we open them up for adoption.”
The animals the Humane Rescue Alliance received from areas affected by Harvey were already homeless.
Williams said the idea is by taking in animals that were already in shelters, shelters in the areas impacted by the storm have more space to take in animals who were made homeless and hopefully reunite them with their families.
“Always, we want to make sure they get with their previous owner,” Williams said. “Hopefully they come up with a microchip so we can find them.”
Shelters scan the animals they bring in to see if they have a microchip, if there is a microchip the shelter can then contact the pets’ owners.
Williams added that Harvey is a reminder for pet owners to make disaster plans for their pets in case a major storm should hit our area.
