WASHINGTON — Light snow showers fell on the region on Friday morning just two days after D.C. area temperatures reached 80 degrees — a jolting reminder that winter is not yet over.
Showers continued to move through the region at about 8:30 a.m. and left cars and grassy surfaces dusted with snow. Roads were wet in some locations, dry in others, but the snow was not accumulating.
However several spinouts and wrecks were reported on bridges and overpasses in northern Montgomery County because of slick, even icy, conditions. Road crews were de-icing a bridge on Maryland Route 121 over Interstate 270, said WTOP traffic reporter Jack Taylor.
A tractor trailer crash on I-270 near MD-85 northbound continued to hamper traffic around 9 a.m.
Taylor reminded commuters to drive cautiously.
Snow showers were expected to continue throughout the day and wind speeds will pick up as the morning continues, creating windchills in the 20s and 30s, said Lauryn Ricketts, Storm Team4 meteorologist.
Temperatures tied a record of 80 degrees in D.C. on Wednesday. Temperatures in Virginia and Maryland climbed into the upper 70s, Ricketts said.
The cold will stick around however for another day. Temperatures on Saturday morning will be in the teens and 20s with sunshine, she said.
