Vote: Huge showdowns between high school football powers up for Game of the Week

WASHINGTON — After a week off, the DMV Game of the Week returns with a vengeance as the calendar flips to November. There are so many good matchups this weekend that we actually had to decide which traditional showdowns to cut. We also always enjoy featuring new schools to choose from, and a number of the ones in this week’s poll have earned it.

Two teams remain undefeated in the Interstate Football standings, but that number will drop to one after Friday night. Georgetown Prep’s only loss of the season came at the hands of Gonzaga, 21-20. The Little Hoyas (7-1) have been unstoppable ever since, and have reeled off three consecutive  league shutouts while scoring 35 or more in each game. They’ll face a perfect Episcopal squad that has dispatched every other team in the league by at least 14 points. The Maroon (7-0) have their chance to avenge last year’s loss and snag their first IAC title in 10 years.

All year long, Annapolis has proved its success is no fluke. The Panthers (9-0) survived one close call on the road at Severna Park, but haven’t otherwise played anything less than a three possession game, all while averaging better than 48 points per game. This Friday, though, they’ll face their toughest challenge yet, traveling to Millersville to take on Old Mill. The Patriots (9-0) have been downright dominant, scoring at least 33 points in every game and posting four shutouts. The winner will top the Anne Arundel County standings and position themselves in great shape for the Maryland 4A playoffs.

While DeMatha has been unstoppable so far, two long-standing WCAC rivals will duke it out Saturday in the D.C. Catholic Classic. Gonzaga (7-2) has dispatched the rest of the WCAC outside of the Stags and is coming off back-to-back blowout wins. St. John’s (7-2) has done the same, with the Cadets’ only two losses each coming to teams ranked in the top 10 in the country. The Cadets enjoy the home field edge, but this game is always a toss-up, especially when both teams are playing well coming in.

Pick below between our three matchups for which game we’ll feature in advance and bring you live updates, photos and videos of the game as it happens this weekend. As always, the poll will close at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday night.

UPDATE: Congrats to Episcopal and Georgetown Prep for turning out the vote. See you Friday night!
