WASHINGTON — Shopping malls aren’t the only places where people are lining up for the chance to get something really special this holiday season.

The Humane Rescue Alliance in D.C. (formerly the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League) is offering a “Black Friday” special now through Sunday. Adoption fees are waived for the furry and scaly critters up for adoption. (Yes, they have turtles and sometimes even snakes up for adoption.)

Beyoncé, Jay Z and Migeezy were among the cats waiting to be taken home. And the dogs — Marathon, Frodo and Elmer Fudd — were being paired up with potential adoptive families, as well.

Travis Giteau was waiting patiently for his chance to see if Marathon might be a good fit.

“I’m looking for a little partner in crime to take hiking and go running with, maybe even a 5K if they’re up for it,” he said.

Jessica Davis was already in one of the private rooms where potential adopters can “meet and greet” the dogs they are considering.

“I’d like a dog that’s really friendly and adventurous,” she said.

Marielle Doyle clutched a little black dog named Thor in her arms. Thor already belongs to Doyle. She brought him to the special adoption event hoping to find him a match for companionship at home.

Thor is an easygoing guy, she said.

“He’s really loving and very warmhearted. He’s attached to anybody. It doesn’t matter who you are,” Doyle said, who has her eye on a little Labrador mix puppy.

In the cat room, families oohed and aahed over tabbies, tortoiseshells and tiny kittens waiting for adoption. Volunteers and staff members highlighted the quirks of each, noting that some are lap-sitters, and others love nothing more than a good scratch behind the ears.

Alix John, media specialist with HRA, said while the adoption fees are waived, District licensing fees still apply. Each potential adopter got briefings on what it takes to make a successful lifetime connection with their new companion.
