Caravan of drivers supporting Trump clogs Beltway’s outer loop Sunday

Miles-long stretches of cars waving flags and donning decorations for President Donald Trump caused delays all around the Capital Beltway’s outer loop Sunday afternoon.

The WTOP Traffic Center reported just after 1 p.m. issued caution to all drivers on the Beltway for the caravan, which was traveling below speed in the middle lanes of the Outer Loop.

The Trump 2020 Capital Beltway Caravan started at noon Sunday and was scheduled to end around 2 p.m. The WTOP Traffic Center said delays caused by the event wrapped up before 3 p.m.

Nearly 1,000 people signed up to attend the caravan on the event’s Facebook page. Another 1,900 expressed interest in attending the event.

The page instructed drivers to drive safe, and not exceed speeds of 35 mph, in order to prevent flags and other decorations from flying off cars and creating debris in the roadway. Organizers also instructed drivers to keep their emergency flashers on at all times and to avoid controversial messages and flags because the page said the caravan was trying to promote a positive message.

Organizers posted on Facebook and an Eventbrite page a list of meeting locations across Virginia and Maryland for cars to gather ahead of time and drive onto the Beltway together.
