PHOTOS: Britain gathers to mourn Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, died Sept. 8 at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle, her summer residence in Scotland. A link to the almost-vanished generation that fought World War II, she was the only monarch most Britons have ever known, and her name defines an age: the modern Elizabethan Era.

Her state funeral on Sept. 19 was preceded by a period of “Lying-in-State,” that officially ended, hours before her state funeral at Westminster Abbey, as her nation enters a period of National Mourning. See photos.
