Veterans Day celebrations around the U.S. on Monday are honoring the sacrifices of those who have served in the country’s military.

Among those commemorating the holiday in the D.C. area was President Joe Biden, who delivered remarks at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Crowds also gathered to honor men who fought in World War II, nearly 80 years after the war ended, at the Friends of the World War II Memorial’s Annual wreath laying ceremony.

“It makes me feel good, like my life wasn’t wasted in the Navy. They really appreciate what we did, not me only, but all my friends,” said Navy veteran Stanley Teller, 100, about the crowd that came to thank him for his service.

Teller served as a radio operator during amphibious landings in four major engagements in the Pacific, including Guam and Peleliu.

“Invading Peleliu, that was the worst battle for me, personally,” Teller said.

Listen to World War II veteran Stanley Tiller, 100, talk with WTOP's Luke Lukert.

He and his crewmates saved the lives of dozens of Marines. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his efforts.
