Car Review: Yukon AT4 now offers a more off-road worthy, big SUV

The GMC Yukon has a more distinctive look and is no longer a clone with a different badge like it was just a few years ago. The GMC Yukon AT4 is also a newer trim level that offers a tough and more off-road looking version of the big SUV. The AT4 trim level adds 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires and extra ground clearance. Front skid plates and even red-colored recovery hooks tell you this big SUV can tackle some off-roading without much worry.

The biggest improvement of the GMC Yukon and other big GM SUVs is found inside. The materials and layout of the interior are very easy to use. Choosing the AT4 trim level get you perks like perforated leather heated and ventilated seats that make summer and winter drives a bit easier. The second row heated bucket seats and dual rear seat media center will keep you entertained on longer journeys. The third row is usable for kids, and now adults will fit thanks to extra space from the redesign.

The extra space inside comes from the switch to independent rear suspension that also improves the handling. It’s a more confident Yukon in the corners because of the rear end and is more in line with the competition. The AT4 trim level comes with excellent Air Ride adaptive suspension that makes this big SUV a smooth operator even on rough roads. The 5.3L V8 gets a few more ponies than before and has no problem keeping up with traffic and the ability to tow and carry heavier loads compared to a crossover. Fuel economy is better than the last generation Yukon and some of the help comes from a smooth operating 10-speed automatic transmission.

MPG: 16mpg city, 20 mpg highway. I managed 18.3 mpg in 632 miles of mixed driving.
