When Hyundai launched its luxury brand, Genesis, in 2017, it made sedans that offered the luxury experience for less than the competition. The sedans were very nice but they were not as compelling as the established players were.
However, the second-generation G80 midsize luxury sedan looks like a real competitor now.
The sculpted, long body is much more noticeable now. The front-end styling says, “Look at me,” with a large grill and bold LED lighting clusters that have a unique design. Even the 19″ wheels have a cool web design and work well with the curves and creases of the body.
Hop inside and the transformation to true luxury sedan is on full display. Upgraded materials and a more upscale look are inviting. The heated and ventilated front seats provide a comfortable space to pass the miles. Passengers in the back have generous head and legroom for a midsize sedan. The one downside is that the rear seat does not fold down to provide extra space for longer items.
A new standard engine sits in the redesigned G80 for 2021, replacing the V6 from last year. Don’t worry; the 300hp turbo four-banger moves the car nicely. Not enough power for you? A twin turbo V6 is also available.
All-wheel drive is a $3,150 option and does a good job in the snow, providing good traction. What was surprising to me is how well the Genesis G80 handles twisty roads in the dry weather. The large cabin is hushed at all speeds and the supple suspension keeps the big bumps in check.
Cost: $50,850; as tested $56,000.
MPG: 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway; I managed 26.1 mpg in 266 miles of mixed driving.
Safety: Forward collision-avoidance assist; safe exit assist; blind-spot collision avoidance assist; lane keeping assist; high beam assist; blind view monitor; smart cruise control with machine learning; surround view monitor; driver attention warning; parking distance waring reverse; highway drive assist2.
Options: $4,600 Advanced package; $500 Vik Black with Maroon Brown, Havana Brown with Olive Ash.
