Car Review: The 2021 Nissan Armada is a capable, comfortable and modern SUV

The extra-large SUV class is getting very competitive for 2021, with many models seeing big updates for the year. Nissan has retooled the Armada with a refreshed look up front. A new grill and LED light clusters make the Armada a modern, yet tough looking SUV. I had the top-of-the-line Armada in platinum trim that dresses up the big ride with 22-inch, 14-spoke wheels.

Nissan gave some love to the interior of the Armada as well, to help bring it up today’s standards. Heated and ventilated, quilted leather seats are standard on this platinum trim-level and really add to an upscale look and feel. Second row captain’s chairs provide good space and plenty of comfort.

The third row is a bit tight for such a large vehicle. A new dash with a large, 12.3-inch touch screen is a welcome upgrade and wireless CarPlay is convenient. The tri-zone entertainment center has dual monitors. Wireless headphones will keep back seat riders occupied.

Big SUVs need big power and Nissan comes with a 400hp V-8 that easily motivates the Armada. A smooth running V-8 can tow up to 8,500 pounds, something that crossovers just can’t handle. The Armada is a big and wide vehicle that does not handle as well as a smaller crossover. Do not think of pushing it in the corners, as body lean and size come into play. Even so, this quiet cruiser makes for a comfortable ride.

Cost: $68,300; as tested $71,605
MPG: 13 city; 18 highway. I managed 15.2 in 247 miles of mixed driving.
Options: $650 captain’s chairs package; $375 rear illuminated scuff guard; $395 interior accent lighting; $390 illuminated kick plates
Safety: Safety Shield 360; intelligent backup intervention; steering assist; intelligent cruise control; automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection; intelligent forward collision warning; rear automatic braking; blind spot warning; rear cross traffic alert; lane departure warning; intelligent lane intervention; high beam assist; traffic sign recognition; intelligent rear view mirror
Things to know: Nissan updates the Armada to compete with the other large SUVs.

Pros:
• New, bold styling cues give the Armada better curb appeal
• Vastly improved interior, with better materials and more style
• Big V-8 power allows the Armada to tow up to 8,500 pounds

Cons:
• V-8 power leads to subpar fuel economy when compared to a smaller crossover
• Third row lacks space when compared to the competition
• It’s a high lift to get cargo into the tall Armada
