BMW calls its SUV, or crossover, a Sport Activity Vehicle. And in the case of the sportier coupe, the X4, BMW names it the Sport Activity Coupe.
With the X4 M40i the sport part is a punchy 382hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine. It will surprise you with quick acceleration and a pleasing sound. Thanks to the mild hybrid system, the fuel economy is bit better than what you would expect for a powerful ride. The handling is also impressive for a taller vehicle. This X4 does not shy away from corners and there’s not much body lean either.
However, some drivers may find it firmer and a little less forgiving on bumpy roads. Some of that has to do with the low profile tires on the optional wheels. One thing that you don’t have to worry about is the exceptional brakes fitted to the X4 that stop this ride quickly.
Why is it called Sport Activity Coupe? Just look at the profile of the X4. It loses its boxy and upright look for a more carlike style. The body has more curves than a traditional looking SUV or crossover. The sloping roofline will remind you of a car with a hatchback instead of the normal lift gate. The X4 gets a new look with revised bumper and larger grills that make it look a bit chunky when you look at the front.
Hop in the driver’s seat and the X4 is pleasing with a comfortable seat and a three-spoke sports steering wheel. The Live Cockpit Pro replaces the normal mechanical gauges and the head-up display keeps eyes on the road. A wide central screen and improved iDrive controller and voice control help you to use the many features of the X4.
However, you need to be careful when climbing in the back seat, as the coupe-like roofline is ready to bruise your head if you are not paying attention. That roofline also hampers the rear cargo space with less space for large and bulky cargo. The vision is also less than a traditional crossover.
