If you’re considering a Volkswagen, like this Jetta GLI Autobahn, you really should look closely at the JD Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability …blah blah blah …
(OK, that’s enough out of you, left brain, or I’ll stab you with a Q-Tip.)
My right brain says the GLI Autobahn is nothing short of a pure delight, thanks to a powerful turbo four-cylinder engine and a comfortable, yet precise, six-speed manual transmission. A limited-slip differential helps with grip, spreading power equally between the front wheels (please watch “My Cousin Vinny” if you need to understand this better).
While it’s not supercar fast, it delivers thrills far in excess of its specifications. (Though the stick is fun, it is, of course, much less enjoyable in rush hour traffic or after leg day at the gym.)
This one also looks great in what’s called Monument Gray, which has strong undertones of blue, too. It’s set off by a black roof and black wheels. A red stripe below the front grille lets you know this car is up to something nefarious, as does a throaty exhaust note.
Inside, there’s a black and gray leather interior to enjoy, with red stitching to boot.
New features for 2026 include some rear-seat safety improvements and a standard wireless connection for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This Autobahn model also gets a premium audio system and some more push buttons on the steering wheel, according to VW.
If your left brain is still screaming out for attention, there’s the following:
- The GLI gets a reasonable 29 mpg combined in city/highway driving, according to the EPA.
- There’s also a spacious rear seat and big trunk, which contains a genuine spare tire.
- And the price is nice, too: $36,125 here, after shipping and with minimal options.
Simply put, it’s a buy, even if the extended warranty might be, too.
