Car Review: Acura looks to keep redesigned 2022 MDX a top pick in 3-row luxury SUV market

Looking for a luxurious three-row mid-size SUV or crossover? The choices are vast. However, the Acura MDX has been a top pick for buyers for 20 years now. To help extend that streak, Acura has really paid attention to the details for its new version.

The new MDX is handsome and keeps enough styling cues that you know what vehicle it is. A new grill design that debuted last year on the redesigned TLX gives it a nice balanced look. I like the jewel eye LED headlights for added style. The MDX SH-AWD A-Spec I drove has a decidedly sportier look than other MDX models. With 20-inch dark-colored wheels and blacked out trim, this MDX will get your attention.

Inside, the redesigned MDX gains more room for the 2022 model. More head and legroom are welcomed for those in the second row. The gain makes the third row more usable too. It’s still best for children, but smaller adults can now take advantage for some shorter trips.

Look at the dash and you see a new look as well. Gone are the dual screens that could cause some confusion in previous MDX models — one large 12.3-inch screen makes it easier than before, but there is still a learning curve to use the system properly.

Acura has done a good job over the years to keep the driving experience an important part of the MDX experience. I was pleased to find out after a few miles that the MDX is still one of the more engaging three-row SUVs on the market. It will gladly perform daily duty with comfort, and the relaxed ride that you expect from a luxury ride. The MDX is tight and stiffer if you choose the sporty dynamic mode and is fun for a larger three-row SUV when the road is not a straight highway. The V6 pumps out 290hp and will satisfy most buyers, but it needs to be revved to get the most power out of it.

Cost: $47,400 base price $58,625; as tested

MPG: 19 City; 25 Highway. I managed 21.2 in 232 miles of mixed driving.

Options: $2,000 SH-AWD; $4,700 Technology package; $3,500 A-Spec package; $500 Performance red pearl

Safety: Blind spot information system; rear cross traffic monitor; front and rear parking sensors; surround view camera system; 10.5” head-up warning display; collision mitigation braking system; road departure mitigation; adaptive cruise control with low speed follow; lane keeping assist system; pedestrian detection; traffic sign recognition; traffic jam assist; low speed braking control

Things to know: The Acura MDX is ready to take on the market of challengers with this redesign. Improved interior with more space and a fresh exterior helps this fun-to-drive three-row luxury SUV.

Pros:

  • An improved interior that is more in-line with other luxury SUV and crossovers
  • The MDX has drivers in mind with a sportier ride than you might expect for a large SUV
  • Price, even fully loaded, is less than other luxury sedans

Cons:

  • Has a learning curve for the new infotainment and NAV system
  • Some might want more power from the 290hp V6 (Type-S model with more power on the way!)
  • Push button gear selector is strange to use at first
