Car Review: 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE — A lot jammed into a small package

We’re looking at a stylish and feature-packed car that is unfortunately constrained by the laws of physics.

This little SUV really does jump right out at you in a stunning new cavalry blue color with an optional jet-black roof.

It’s the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE, and there’s no way around it: this is small. In fact, it’s called a subcompact SUV by some. The biggest penalty is the lack of rear-seat legroom. But lest you think it’s teeny, it’s still large enough to occasionally be mistaken for a RAV4.

This mini package is nonetheless jam-packed with lovely features like a heated steering wheel (standard on this trim level) and an optional power rear hatch.

While it looks sleek, it’s not particularly fast and groans under acceleration. It’s also worth noting that I got a pre-production model, which could explain some shortcomings.

Handling is a plus, with Toyota rightly calling it “akin to a car.”

Its real standout feature, though, is its fuel efficiency, with this all-wheel drive hybrid averaging over 40 miles per gallon for me.

Toyotas are also indeed extremely reliable, according to the 2025 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study.

This car costs $37,030, after shipping. That’s a big premium over the cheapest Corolla Cross, which costs $26,385, after shipping.
