Audi S6 Sportback e-tron dials up the electricity

Audi’s excellent electric A6 did not disappoint when we drove it a few weeks ago, but the automaker is nonetheless upping the ante with an even faster S version.

The S6 Sportback e-tron offers still more performance (top speed: 149 mph), making it a thrilling ride for those who crave extra speed.

Inside this S6, the dark red seats contrast sharply with the metallic gray paint, and ambient lighting bathes the interior in pink and purple hues. Like the A6 e-tron we drove, there’s a panoramic sunroof, which transitions from a frosted to clear tint when the car is on. Also included are power soft-close doors and an optional passenger infotainment screen.

This model boasts an EPA-estimated range of 302 miles, slightly less than the A6 e-tron’s 333 miles. The S6 Sportback e-tron can go from 10% battery life to 80% in just 21 minutes, according to Audi.

Inside, the “driver-oriented cockpit” again features big LED screens for the main display and for the center touch screen.

The S6 Sportback e-tron offers a fold-flat second row of seats and a load area up to 6 feet, 2 inches deep.

However, the fastback body style compromises rear visibility a bit. Audi also put in a less-than-stellar performance in J.D. Power’s latest Vehicle Dependability Study. Its basic warranty still lasts four years or 50,000 miles, though.

This exact model is priced at $88,390 after shipping, compared to $77,240 for the nicely-optioned A6 e-tron we drove.

The price premium is not bad for the extra performance, but the performance in the first place wasn’t bad at all, either.
