WASHINGTON — Police in Frederick, Maryland, are investigating the use of card skimmers found on ATMs around the city, several at Weis Markets, in the past few weeks.
Here’s where the card skimmers have been found:
- Dec. 29, 2017 — Weis Markets, 2 Old Camp Road.
- Jan. 10 — Weis Markets, 448 Prospect Blvd.
- Jan. 13 — BB&T Bank, 1303 E. Patrick St.
- Jan. 14 — Weis Markets, 199 Thomas Johnson Drive.
- Jan. 18 — Weis Markets, 448 Prospect Blvd.
Skimming devices are used to steal information from credit or debit cards, and thieves can later use the stolen data to access bank accounts or make fraudulent charges. Frederick police are asking those who have used ATMs at these locations to check their bank statements and immediately report any unauthorized transactions.
Below are photos of possible suspects from two of the locations.
Police are also asking that if people suspect an ATM has been tampered with to quickly report it.
Before using an ATM, inspect it and check if there’s anything loose, crooked or damaged, according to tips from the FBI. Grab at the card reader and see if it’s properly attached; check to see if there are scratches or tape residue. Also, try to block the keypad when entering your PIN.
