Independence Day Freebies: Fireworks displays, parades and birthday cake

WASHINGTON — Over the next week, communities across the D.C. region will celebrate America’s birthday with parades, races, eating contests and of course fireworks.

Many of those events and activities are free including concerts and entry to certain museums.

Active duty members of the military and their families get free admission to more than 2,000 museums nationwide from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

This year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall is open June 29 to July 4, and July 6 to 9.

Kids and young adults age 18 and younger get free admission to the Newseum July 1 through Labor Day.

The July Fourth celebration at the National Archives starts at 10 a.m.

The Capitol Hill Fourth of July Parade starts at 10 a.m. on July 4.

The Palisades Parade begins at 11 a.m. on July 4.

The National Independence Day Parade in D.C. starts at 11:45 a.m. on July 4.

Gates open at 3 p.m. for A Capitol Fourth concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol. The concert starts at 8 p.m.

The United States Navy Band plays a July Fourth concert from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument.

The July 4 fireworks on the National Mall begin at 9:09 p.m.


July 4 is a free fishing day in Maryland, meaning anglers don’t need to have a fishing license to fish in state waters.

Annapolis has a July 4 parade and fireworks show.

Baltimore’s July 4 fun includes live music and fireworks in the Inner Harbor.

Germantown Glory is a July 4 fireworks show at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

College Park and the University Of Maryland team up for a July 4 concert and fireworks.

Alexandria celebrates its 268th birthday and America’s 241st birthday on July 8 with birthday cake for all, live music, and fireworks.

Arlington has a July Fourth Celebration at Long Bridge Park with activities galore.

The City of Fairfax’s annual July 4 celebration includes a parade and fireworks.

In Falls Church, there will be live music and fireworks at George Mason High School July 4.

Great Falls has a July 4 5K, parade and fireworks.

Herndon has games, entertainment and a fireworks show planned for July 4.

In Leesburg on July 4, enjoy a morning parade, and then a concert and fireworks show in the evening.
