WASHINGTON — Creativity came to life Sunday as competitors used Maryland blue crab to produce the tastiest of recipes for the 13th annual DC Crab Cake Competition.

The event, which took place in Northeast D.C., is geared toward raising funds for scholarships, internships and students participating in culinary programs. It’s organized by the DC Food and Beverage Collective and the Tavern at Ivy City Smokehouse.

Among the student division of the competition was Diane Blackwell, one of the two students from DC Central Kitchen. The organization runs a culinary job training program for people with criminal backgrounds, like incarceration.

“I did a mango jalapeño crabcake with a jalapeño dipping sauce,” said Blackwell.

Nanyaka Thomas, also from DC Central Kitchen, was hoping to take home the $500 scholarship prize with her secret weapon, horseradish.

“I also had a palette pleaser granny apple slaw,” she said.

The winning chef from the D.C. restaurants portion of the event will receive funds to support a culinary intern in their kitchen.
