WASHINGTON — Diners take note: Complaints about an eatery on Yelp usually don’t change much, according to a survey of restaurant professionals.
In fact, it’s better to speak up while still at the restaurant instead of posting about the issue afterward. This and other eating out tidbits are addressed in a survey of 100 restaurant owners, managers, chefs and other industry insiders by Rachael Ray Every Day magazine and the James Beard Foundation.
In the survey, 77 percent said the best way to squeeze in to a popular new restaurant is to eat at the bar. Another recommended strategy is to show up extra early or extra late.
To get the best value at a restaurant, customers should choose a seasonal dish or appetizer.
Most said they pay attention to who their regulars are, and they shower those people with special treatment or goodies.
The majority are happy to make substitutions, unless a diner wants to totally overhaul a dish.
And when it comes to tipping, don’t discriminate: tip on both food and wine, and tips shouldn’t differ between casual places and fine dining.
