Once again, Amazon.com Inc. looks to be turning a shuttered Northern Virginia supermarket into one of its non-Whole Foods Market grocery stores — this one less than seven miles from its Franconia location, which could open as early as the end of this month.
The company looks to be taking all or part of a 38,000-square-foot Shoppers store at 9409 Lorton Market St. that was closed at the start of 2020, according to a sprinkler system permit application submitted to Fairfax County Tuesday. Amazon Fresh, what the e-commerce giant calls its chain of more traditional supermarkets, is named on that document.
This is the eighth new concept grocery store from Amazon the Washington Business Journal has identified as coming to the D.C. area. As usual, Amazon declined to comment.
