WASHINGTON — Every year, the Helen Hayes Awards honor the best in local theater.

The 34th annual ceremony was held Monday night at The Anthem in Southwest D.C.

Olney Theatre and Round House Theatre’s co-production of “In the Heights” led the way with nine awards, including Best Musical and Best Actress (Musical) for Rayanne Gonzales.

Best Actor (Musical) was a tie between Kevin McAllister in “Ragtime” at Ford’s Theatre and Blakely Slaybaugh in “The Pajama Game” at Arena Stage.

Tina Fey’s world premiere of “Mean Girls” at National Theatre won Best Visiting Production.

On the non-musical side, Shakespeare Theatre Company’s “Twelfth Night” won Best Play.

Michael Innocenti won Best Actor in a Play for “Parade” at Keegan Theatre.

Lizan Mitchell won Best Actress in a Play for “A Raisin in the Sun” at Arena Stage.

On the non-equity side, GALA Hispanic Theatre’s “In the Heights” won Best Musical, while Theater Alliance’s “Still Life With Rocket” won Best Play.

The annual Helen Hayes Tribute was presented to actor Nancy Robinette, who has won five Helen Hayes Awards and 18 nominations around the D.C. area over the past 35 years. She made her Broadway debut in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” in 2016.
