‘The Red Violin’ visits WTOP ahead of DC, Va. shows (Video)

WASHINGTON — Chills were felt Friday inside the Glass Enclosed Nerve Center.

Classical violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn visited WTOP with her 1720 Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius, which disappeared for centuries before famously being auctioned at the 1990 Christe’s auction.

That auction inspired François Girard’s Oscar-nominated French film “The Red Violin” (1998), which tracked the perfect red-colored violin across three centuries of owners from different countries.

This weekend, Pitcairn will perform Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (“Spring,” “Summer, “Autumn,” “Winter”) with the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra at Northern Virginia Community College’s Schlesinger Concert Hall on Saturday night and at George Washington University’s Masonic Temple on Sunday.

But first, she busted out the priceless violin for a live performance at WTOP.
