Aretha Franklin, Hank Aaron highlight inaugural American Portrait Gala

WASHINGTON – The Kennedy Center has its annual Kennedy Center Honors.

Ford’s Theatre has its annual Ford’s Theatre Gala.

Now, the Smithsonian is getting in on the action by launching a new event.

Tuesday morning, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery announced the inaugural American Portrait Gala to be held later this year.

The museum’s first ever fundraising gala will honor five individuals whose portraits are in the museum’s collection — Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Henry “Hank” Aaron, U.S. Marine and Medal of Honor-recipient Cpl. Kyle Carpenter, singer and musician Aretha Franklin, fashion designer Carolina Herrera and artist Maya Lin.

The ceremony will be held Sunday, Nov. 15.
