Police arrest student who brought gun to DC high school

WASHINGTON — Police arrested a teenage student who brought a gun to his D.C. school Monday morning.

A 16-year-old student was stopped with a loaded gun at the security check at Wilson High School, said D.C. police spokesman Margarita Mikhaylova in an email. The juvenile’s name has not been released.

The administration was notified about the weapon on school grounds as students arrived in the morning, said Wilson High School Principal Kim Martin in an email sent to parents. Police were immediately notified, she said.

Martin reassured parents that “all students and staff remained safe throughout this process.”

“I feel very fortunate to have a well-trained security staff that was aware and handled this situation quickly and appropriately,” Martin said in the email.

Martin asked parents to talk about the incident with their children to “emphasize that it is against the law to bring weapons of any type to school.”

“… Please stress the importance of reporting to you or a staff member if there is a weapon at school. In this way, we are all working together to keep our school safe,” she said in the email.

A similar incident happened at another D.C. school earlier this month. A student tried to enter Ballou High School with a gun around 9 a.m. Police say metal detectors inside the school helped detect the weapon. School resource officers stopped and arrested him, and no one was injured.
