WASHINGTON — Police arrested a former D.C. congressional delegate and civil rights leader at Dulles International Airport Monday as he returned from four years overseas.
Former D.C. delegate and civil rights leader Walter Fauntroy was picked up by border patrol Monday after arriving on a flight from Dubai to Dulles.
The 83-year-old is wanted in Prince George’s County for failure to appear in connection with writing a bad $50,000 check. The money was meant for a National Harbor inaugural ball for President Obama that never happened.
Fauntroy is being held without bond, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Fauntroy founded the Free South Africa movement and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington. He went on to serve as D.C.’s first delegate to Congress and was the pastor of the New Bethel Baptist Church for 50 years before retiring in 2009.
