Washington Monument to reopen Sunday

WASHINGTON — The Washington Monument will open as scheduled 9 a.m. Sunday. The monument has been closed since Friday afternoon due a problem with the elevator.

Ticket distribution will begin 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Washington Monument Lodge, located on 15th Street between Madison and Jefferson drives.

National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst said in an email that technicians had fixed the elevator on Saturday.

Problems were traced to a faulty power supply that caused occasional elevated electrical current levels. The same problem was responsible for a service interruption on Tuesday, Litterst said.
