McRae, 44, died on Wednesday, May 6, after battling a two-alarm blaze at a high-rise apartment building in Logan Circle in Northwest, D.C. The veteran firefighter had been with the department for 24 years.

Three other people, including a second firefighter, were injured in the fire, which damaged the apartment building in the 1300 block of 7th Street NW.
