Southwest Airlines rolls out ‘Shark Week’ fleet

WASHINGTON — Five Southwest Airlines jets are sporting a shark and special paint job promoting Discovery Channel’s upcoming “Shark Week.”

Southwest passengers will also get a sneak peak at one of the episodes before the viewing public.

The painted planes will remain in Southwest’s fleet through Aug. 31. They can be tracked at FlightAware.com, where a shark icon has replaced the usual airplane icon on the tracking map.

Southwest has also added a “Shark Week” channel to its onboard entertainment lineup with a library of episodes. Discovery will also premiere a never-before-seen episode, “Great White Abyss,” for Southwest passengers before it is aired during “Shark Week.”

Discovery and Southwest also have an online sweepstakes called Dare to Dive, which offers a chance to win a five-day great white shark cage-diving trip at Mexico’s Guadalupe Island.

This is the 30th anniversary of Shark Week. It runs July 22–29.
