Maryland is one of the best states for Tesla owners

WASHINGTON — U.S. News & World Report ranks Maryland No. 3 on its list of best states for Tesla owners.

Although Maryland currently has only three Tesla supercharging locations (fast-charging station located across most major routes in America), U.S. News notes that’s enough, considering Maryland’s compact geography.

And electric car drivers are served well by Maryland’s 405 other public charging locations and the state’s relatively low 15-cent-per-kilowatt-hour home utility rate.

Maryland also grants EV drivers open access to the state’s carpool lanes. And Maryland has a $3,000 tax credit for buying any electric car, including a Tesla.

“That amounts to only a small discount off a Tesla’s luxury price,” U.S. News says, “but it’s better than what you’d get in most states.”

Two states rank better than Maryland for Tesla owners on the U.S. News list: Colorado, whose tax credit is $5,000 and where there is no sales tax on an EV; and Tennessee, home to Nissan’s U.S. headquarters, which has rolled out electric car chargers early and thick in support of Nissan’s EV, the Leaf, and where electricity rates are among the lowest in the nation at 10 cents per kilowatt-hour.
