Amid DC-area bank mergers, Access National Bank expands in Northern Va.

WASHINGTON — Reston-based Access National Bank, one of the D.C. region’s largest Small Business Administration lenders, is adding branches in Northern Virginia amid a wave of community bank consolidation in the area.

Access National will open a branch in a former Bank of Georgetown location at 2300 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington’s Courthouse neighborhood by the end of this year.

It will be Access National’s sixth branch in Northern Virginia. A seventh branch in Alexandria is expected to open in September.

“Recent market disruption created by bank mergers has accelerated our plans to expand with an office in Arlington,” said CEO Michael Clarke. “This former Bank of Georgetown branch places our team of banking professionals in the heart of the Arlington business community.”

Access National, whose customers are government contractors, trade associations and nonprofits, was founded in 1999. It ended the second quarter with $1.3 billion in assets.

United Bankshares agreed to acquire Cardinal Bank earlier this month. In April, United closed on its acquisition of Bank of Georgetown and bought Virginia Commerce Bank in 2013.
