WASHINGTON — Fire damaged 14 homes in East Baltimore early Tuesday morning.
Fire department spokesman Capt. Roman Clark says firefighters were called to Eaton Street in the Highlandtown area just before 4 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a fire and the blaze spread to 14 homes, including three that collapsed. He says it took 94 firefighters about an hour to control the blaze.
Clark says residents reported being awakened by smoke alarms. He says the fire spread rapidly since the brick-faced homes are mostly wood and lack firestops between the homes.
Clark says 14 families have been displaced. He says many have been taken in by neighbors, but the Red Cross is expected to be called in to help.
The cause is under investigation.
