WASHINGTON — A man is in the hospital with gunshot wounds and a woman is in custody after a police shooting Thursday night in Arlington.

Officers attempted a traffic stop near the intersection of South Edgewood Street and 12th Street South around 8:11 p.m., according to Arlington police. As they approached the vehicle on foot, the driver, 51-year-old Steven Best, allegedly ignored the officers’ commands and struck police vehicles in an attempt to flee the scene. The two officers fired shots, wounding Best.

The vehicle Best was driving also struck and damaged a parked car in the 2800 block of 12th, police said.

Best and a female passenger, 40-year-old Jessica Lary of Annandale, apparently abandoned the vehicle near the intersection of South Irving Street and 13th Street South.

Responding officers set up a perimeter and found Best under a car. He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He faces charges of attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer.

Lary, who had outstanding warrants for probation violation, was found hiding behind a bush. She was hospitalized for minor injuries and is being held at the Arlington County Detention Facility without bond.
