Arlington officials discuss streetcar, parking ticket challenges

WASHINGTON — The debate over Arlington’s disputed Columbia Pike streetcar is almost over.

County Manager Barbara Donnellan, who announced her retirement on Friday, says the county is assessing the costs of transit alternatives.  Among the choices, county officials are considering enhanced buses.

“The wind down has pretty much taken place,” Donnellan says. “We are looking at what plans have to be looked at, some sooner rather than later.”

Donnellan will retire in June after more than four years as county manager and more than 30 years in county government.

On Saturday, the Arlington County Board approved changes to make it easier to fight some tickets left on parked cars.

The new rules are meant to make it easier to challenge tickets on parked cars for  expired safety inspections, expired registration and expired personal property decals.”

Also on Saturday, the board agreed to hold a public hearing in April regarding a possible historic designation for the Wilson School in Arlington.

The school system had been considering use of the site to build a new school, which would alleviate overcrowding issues. There has been outspoken opposition to the change.
