Police: Man dies after crashing into car, jumping off Severn River Bridge

WASHINGTON — A man has died after jumping off the Severn River Bridge on Sunday morning, police said.

Before jumping, the man crashed his car into another vehicle and struck concrete barriers along U.S. Route 50, before exiting his own vehicle and jumping into Severn River, police said.

Police have not identified the man. Police said they’re investigating the death as an apparent suicide.

The incident was reported in Annapolis around 8:30 a.m.

Maryland State Police received a 911 call from a motorist who said that a man had jumped off the westbound side of the bridge.

Police said before the man jumped, he had been driving a Hyundai Santa Fe west on U.S. 50, where he struck the back of a Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep sustained minor damage.

Police said the man continued to drive, striking the center median and crossing all lanes of traffic and striking a concrete barrier on the shoulder.

He then exited the vehicle and jumped off the bridge, said police, citing witness accounts.

Anne Arundel County Fire Department recovered the man’s body, which was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Police said the man was the only person in the vehicle.

Maryland State Police have asked anyone with information to call 410-267-5800.
