WASHINGTON — An Anne Arundel County man is dead after an accident while he was crabbing with his wife Friday.
Ronald Gressit, 63, was putting out crab traps with his wife at about 8 a.m. Friday when he stumbled and fell into the water at in Cornfield Creek just north of Annapolis.
Gressit’s wife tried to throw him a life jacket and a nearby kayaker tried to paddle out to the struggling man, but they were not able to help him.
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department pulled his body from the water after 1 p.m. Friday.
Candy Thomson with Maryland Natural Resources police says this has been a particularly deadly year for Maryland boaters.
This is the 15th boating fatality in Maryland so far this year. Twelve Maryland boaters died in all of 2014.
Thomson says a few simple safety measures save lives every day. She says it’s important for boaters to know the safety features on their boat, always tell someone where you’re going and, of course, wear a life jacket.
