Jefferson-Houston School students sent home early over gas leak

WASHINGTON — Students at Jefferson-Houston School in Alexandria are being sent home early because of a natural gas leak near the building, Alexandria City Public Schools said in a statement Thursday.

All students have been evacuated from the building and accounted for, and the fire department is on the scene, the school said.

All after-school activities are canceled.

Families will be contacted by students’ teachers to work out a plan for picking up students. After 1 p.m., all students will be transported to George Washington Middle School to be picked up by parents.

The school released this information about picking up students:

If you are planning to pick up your child
If you have arranged with the teacher to pick up your child, please do so before 1:00 p.m. from the playing field on Cameron Street. Parents and guardians can also pick up their child from George Washington Middle School after 1 p.m. No child will be released without being signed out by a parent or guardian. After 1:00 p.m. all students will be transported to George Washington Middle School and will remain there for the rest of the day. All after-school activities are canceled at Jefferson-Houston School.

After 1:00 p.m. all students will be transported to George Washington Middle School and will remain there for the rest of the day. Buses will be available to take students home from George Washington Middle School at the usual dismissal time of 2:35 p.m. for Jefferson-Houston students.
