Katie Ledecky wins 5th gold medal at World Championships

WASHINGTON — Katie Ledecky swam to victory in the 800-meter freestyle, winning her fifth gold medal at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

But Ledecky, a D.C. area native and the star of the 2016 Olympic Games, may look back at Budapest with a little disappointment. She had to settle for a silver medal in the 200 free and never came close to breaking any of her personal records

“I’ve never walked away from a season completely satisfied, even last year,” Ledecky said. “I can really take what I’ve learned and use it moving forward. It gets me really excited. If that was my bad year for the next four years, then the next couple years are going to be pretty exciting.”

Also at the event, 20-year-old American Caeleb Dressel became the first swimmer to win three gold medals in one night at the World Championships, with a victory in the 50-meter freestyle, the 100 butterfly and a world record showing in the 4×100 free relay.
