DC sports radio host Tony Kornheiser leaving station

WASHINGTON — D.C. sports radio host Tony Kornheiser is leaving WTEM-AM (ESPN 980), the station’s owners said in a news release Thursday.

His final show on the station will air in late June, according to the news release from Red Zebra Broadcasting. Kornheiser said he is leaving the station to pursue a new project: He has plans to launch a podcast this September.

Kornheiser joined the WTEM team as part of its original lineup in 1992. The show has appeared on multiple stations over the years.

The host also co-stars with Michael Wilbon on ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption.”

“I have loved every minute on the radio at WTEM,” Kornheiser said in the release.

Red Zebra Broadcasting had not yet announced plans for a new show to fill Kornheiser’s midday slot.

“Tony is a pillar in the Washington, D.C., sports community, and we would like to express our sincerest gratitude and thank him for his dedication,” said Terry Bateman, chairman of Red Zebra Broadcasting, in the release.
