UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A Prince George’s County Police officer has been found guilty of misconduct in office, after surveillance video showed him punching and shoving a young man in custody.
Officer Jerry Thomas responded to a holding cell after hearing screaming and other noises.
The surveillance video from 2012 shows he punched the handcuffed teen twice in the head and then shoved his face down on a bench.
“We wouldn’t have even known about this had the police not brought it to us,” says Angela Alsobrooks, the state’s attorney.
On Thursday, Thomas took a plea for misconduct in office.
Prosecutors will push for jail time at his sentencing in June.
Thomas was suspended with pay pending an internal review. Police Chief Mark Magaw says termination is “absolutely on the table.”
