A sleep-friendly solution for coffee lovers

WASHINGTON — Many depend on coffee to get the day started. And some like to keep the buzz going all day long, which can make it difficult to wind down when bedtime comes around.

A British Columbia-based coffee company says it has the solution to that caffeine conundrum with its Counting Sheep Coffee.

The company’s coffee undergoes the Swiss Water Process, which claims to remove 99.9 percent of the caffeine without using chemicals, according to Today. It is then blended with organic valerian root, which is an herbal sedative, so you can sip coffee after dinner without a jolt.

It’s available in two strengths: Bedtime Blend/40 Winks and the stronger Lights Out! The company’s website states the latter has more added valerian root and a bolder taste.

According to the Mayo Clinic, several short-term studies found that valerian root may reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep. However, not all studies have shown it to be effective. As with any supplement, check with your doctor before consuming the herb, especially if it may interfere with medications.

Counting Sheep Coffee was founded in 2013 and has since been spreading its doze-friendly blends through Amazon.com. But now, The Boston Globe reports it could soon be sold at Wal-Mart and other regional groceries.

A map on the Counting Sheep Coffee website indicates it is carried at a Bed Bath & Beyond store in Vienna, Virginia. Other than that, the closest location to pick up a bag is in Philadelphia, or you can try Amazon.com.
