Twins of pregnant woman who was shot die after being born

WASHINGTON (AP) — The twins of a pregnant shooting victim died shortly after being born, the woman’s mother says.

Cassandra Johnson, the mother of 21-year-old Lakira Renee Johnson, tells The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/2c5dw0c ) that her daughter, who was five months pregnant, went into labor on Saturday. She says the twins were born alive and named Heaven and Nevaeh, but soon died.

D.C. Police say Lakira Johnson was shot on Aug. 30 as she was leaving a carryout in the northeast section of the city. Authorities say she was one of two bystanders wounded by gunfire. No arrests have been made.

Cassandra Johnson says her daughter underwent surgery on Monday to fix some of the damage to her own body. The newborns’ bodies were taken to the medical examiner’s office.
