WASHINGTON — The search is on for the man who shot and critically wounded an Anne Arundel County Police officer early Friday.
Police cadets and K-9 dogs assisted police in the Annapolis, Maryland search.
“We do not believe the suspect is in the area where the shooting occurred,” police say in a news release.
The officer, who has not been identified, remains in critical condition at University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
Police responded to the shooting at the 7-Eleven at 720 East College Parkway at 2:20 a.m.
Police say the 7-Eleven was a convenience store the officer routinely visited, When he got there, a witness told the officer about a suspicious person outside.
Police say they don’t know whether the officer interrupted a robbery, but they say he and the suspect struggled outside the 7-Eleven.
Both ended up running off on foot, and witnesses then heard a gunshot.
Police say the “suspect apparently had a weapon of his own and did not use the officer’s weapon to shoot him.”
When additional officers arrived, they found the wounded officer shot in the upper body. He was wounded in an area not covered by his police vest.
As police search for the armed and dangerous suspect, they are asking residents to report anything suspicious. Police can be called at 410-222-4700 or 410-222-8620.
The suspect is described as a black man, between 20 and 30, who is 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-8. Police say he was wearing a dark “hoody” and dark pants that are not jeans.
It is not known whether the surveillance footage at the convenience store captured any footage that will help with the investigation.
Police say the department has not had any fatal shootings in its history. This was the first officer shot in the line of duty since July of 2008, when an officer was shot in Brooklyn Park.
