Heads up! Nationals Racing Presidents application deadline is Wednesday

WASHINGTON — Maybe you’ve always wanted to be in the big leagues; maybe you’ve always wanted to run for president. Maybe people just tell you you’ve got a big head. Whatever your reason, Wednesday is the deadline to apply to be one of the Washington Nationals’ Racing Presidents.

The Nationals are looking for candidates to fill the shoes — and the 12-foot heads — of George, Tom, Abe and Teddy at their home games for the 2018 season. The first step is to apply online.

The job entails greeting fans before the game, running in the traditional race in the middle of the fourth inning, hanging out for photos for an inning after that, being part of the seventh-inning stretch and other duties, including outside appearances, as assigned.

You have to be between 5-foot-7 and 6-foot-6, have at least a high school diploma, get to at least 40 percent of the home games, and be able to run from center field to first base — about 200 yards, wearing the costume, which is about 50 pounds.

If the team picks your application, the next step is the tryouts, to be held Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, on Ely Place in Southeast. You’ll have to do the run and answer questions from team staff.
