RICHMOND, Va. — The Redskins have signed some help at cornerback. With injuries to Bashaud Breeland, Tevin Mitchel and David Amerson, Washington is getting thin at a position where it had a good amount of depth coming into camp.
The team announced Wednesday it has signed free agent cornerback Bryan McCann and college free agent cornerback DreQuan Hoskey out of UVa.
McCann was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys in 2010. He has also spent time with the Ravens, Raiders, Dolphins and most recently the Cardinals. He has appeared in 35 career games with 28 tackles and one interception.
Hoskey played his collegiate ball at UVa, where he appeared in 46 games.
The Redskins have also released safety Phillip Thomas. Thomas was originally drafted by the Redskins in 2013, but injuries prevented him from being the player the team thought he could be out of school. He was once thought of as the answer to the uncertainty at safety.
The team has also waived Mitchel. The rookie tore his labrum during practice on Saturday and will have season ending surgery. If he clears waivers he can be placed on IR.
