Redskins prepared for Texans’ visit to Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — Wednesday was day seven of camp and the final practice before the Texans get here for three days of joint practices. You could tell the Redskins were ready for a change.

The practice didn’t seem as crisp all the way around this afternoon. It seemed as if guys were just going through the motions. There were missed assignments, dropped balls, etc. I can see that happening after an off day perhaps, but still — they didn’t look that sharp. Here are a few observations from the day.

  • Colt McCoy had his chance today to work with the second team and Kirk Cousins with the third. When this happens, the third team doesn’t always get a lot of the work on the 11-on-11 drills, but Cousins got his chance to do some work today. It’s kind of hard to tell how effective the quarterbacks were because of the all around nature of the practice today. Jay Gruden confirmed again today that the quarterback competition will continue through the preseason.
  • Second-year offensive tackle Morgan Moses — working his way back from the foot sprain that ended his season last December — was working at right tackle today with the first team, while rookie Brandon Scherff was pushed over to right guard. New offensive line coach Bill Callahan said on Monday that he will continue to move guys around as preparation for injury, so everyone will be comfortable if the time comes. I’m not sure if this is a result of that or how they feel so far about Spencer Long.
  • Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan never takes a play off. The guy is a machine. He was in the backfield on almost every play during the 11-on-11 drills today, no matter what side he lined up on. He signed a huge contract last week, but do not expect to see any drop off in his production.

Injuries

Strong safety Jeron Johnson missed practice with a hamstring injury.

Terrance “Pot Roast” Knighton came down with an illness this morning.

Attendance

The numbers continue to be lower this year and today the Redskins announce an attendance of 5,006. It will be interesting to see what the numbers look like the next three days beginning Friday when the Texans arrive for an 8:35 a.m. practice.
