Washington Capitals announce Todd Reirden as next head coach

WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals announced Friday that assistant coach Todd Reirden will take over as head coach for the 2018-19 season. He takes over for Barry Trotz, who resigned from his position on June 18.

Reirden has been an assistant coach with the Caps since 2014, when he joined the team from a similar role with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He had a five-year NHL playing career with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, scoring 11 goals with 35 assists in 183 games.
